NIGHTSTAND ALTERNATIVES THAT WORK JUST AS WELL

Your nightstand might be one of the most personal pieces of furniture. Not only do you spend a third of your life sleeping next to it, most of us also use our nightstands as a home for an intimate collection of our most personal objects. Aside from being a highly personal piece of furniture, your nightstand should also be functional. And sometimes, the most functional nightstand is actually no nightstand at all.

Break the mold, be unique and place something other than a nightstand next to your bed that offers the same function but is different than the usual. Swapping out standard furniture for something unexpected can add loads of personality to a boring bedroom.

See our detailed list here with photos and detailed justifications.

BOOKSHELF

Bookshelves are stalwart storage options for so much more than novels and nonfiction. It can house books (of course) as well as decorative boxes for storing personal items like those earplugs and eye masks.

FLOATING SHELF

If your bedside space is challenging, or if you prefer a minimalist style, try a floating shelf as your night-table alternative. Shelves flanking the sides of the bed often appear built-in and look best when they are the same size and style.

MOVE A STOOL OVER

For another low-cost alternative to a nightstand, try a small stool, bench, or ottoman. This is an easy, portable option that also doubles as a convenient spot to put your shoes on in the morning.

DOUBLE DUTY

When it comes to making the most of a storage piece, try using a dresser as your nightstand. This 2-for-1 approach helps you save space in the room.

SIDE TABLE

If you still want a flat, sturdy space for your stuff, but don’t necessarily want the bulk of a nightstand, consider a small side table.

FLOOR LAMP

Sometimes you don’t really need a lot next to your bed. Consider the way a table lamp will lighten up the room while adding extra space as an alternative to nightstands.

TRUNK IT

To add a vintage look to your bedroom, go for those old and weathered suitcases you’ve had your eye on in the thrift store. Stack them together.

CUSTOM PLATFORM BED

The built-in custom platform bed with nightstand surface looks fabulous, but it ain’t cheap and it’s permanent.  On the balance, these arrangements look fabulous and look at all that surface area.

CONSOLE TABLE

In the bedroom, a console table can pull double duty as a nightstand and desk, or a nightstand and vanity, thanks to the open space that allows you to place a stool, ottoman or chair underneath.

The best part about these options above? Most of them are common enough pieces that you may already have on hand. If not, you’ll be able to pick them up for a reasonable price at a garage sale or flea market.
