When it comes to large, open rooms or studio apartments, it’s important to know how to divide up the space. From personalized designs to homemade problem-solvers, room partitions can come in many forms and styles. These functional pieces can make your home so much more interesting in look and feel, but also create more nooks and crannies to play with.
For inspiration, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite partition ideas, which are game changers for dining areas, living spaces, and more.
MESH PARTITION WITH CLIMBING PLANTS
Grow vertical climbing plants indoors, trained up a simple, minimal wire mesh partition. This one flanks stairs, but the idea would work well against a sunny internal wall too.
A frosted glass room divider will help create those rooms you’ve been lacking in your studio apartment, but it’ll also keep things feeling airy and light with a lot of spacious pieces.
DELUXE INDOOR WINDOW
A custom piece with gorgeous detailing and a windowed finish, this is such a great way to create room division. You can see into the next room but still create separation with ease and style.
WOODEN SLATS AS A FOCAL POINT
Although slat walls offer a functional, practical way to separate spaces, they can also be an artistic way to make a decorative statement. With alternating slats on both sides, this type of wall could also hide coats or a small office behind it; easy to access but out of sight.
HUGE BLACK BOARD
This is definitely a great idea that’s on the low budget categories. Cheaper than the other type of partition, black board serves double-duty, mainly as a partition and secondly, you or your kids can use it to get creative.
An indoor bamboo thicket partitioning the bedroom from the en suite bathroom. Chic and urbane with an earthy twist, this look could have been lifted straight from the lobby of some ultraluxe Balinese resort. Fortunately for the city slicker or suburbanite, the look is temptingly easy to replicate.
Create an entirely new room in the corner with a custom built partition. These “walls” have a mixed material style that we adore and a very modern flavor.
The storage wall is a flexible device that can work almost anywhere. The one in this apartment is to separate the living and sleeping areas. The square central section swivels to allow the TV to be viewed from either side.
We saw above how sheers can create movable walls to divide a large space. Here, they’re hung to form a fluid partition that allows the bed to be placed in a position that may not otherwise make sense: smack in the center of the room.
The more open the fabric patterning, the more subtle the space-defining effects will be. We like how this fabric very minimally defines an entry and circulation space without the need for a partition wall.
Whether you have an open floor plan or just want to create more private, cozy spaces in your home the right room divider can make all the difference. The photos in this post go well beyond a folding screen.
