Use creative touches to reorganize a cluttered or bare console.
Console tables were once solely decorative pieces in opulent homes and palaces, but nowadays they are used to house everything from lamps and books to ceramics and artwork.
The furniture is often found in entrance halls, the foundation for a stylish vignette to greet visitors, but a console table is also a smart addition to a living or dining room, where it can act as both extra storage and a stylish surface for display-worthy dishes or picture frames.
Here, we’re outlining a simple formula for creating an expertly styled, magazine-worthy vignette, one that can be customized in infinite ways to achieve a look you love.
FIND THE PERFECT TABLE FOR YOUR STYLE
These surfaces can serve as purely decorative, say in a hallway, or fulfill a functional need that providing a space to house essentials like keys, mail and stationery just inside your door. Think about how you will use this piece of furniture, this will dictate its style.
CREATE AN ANCHOR
A large focal point in center of your table. It can be a mirror, a piece of art, or even a couple pieces of art/photos. I call it an anchor because it is a “heavy object” that centers the console, so it won’t move, per se.
BALANCING YOUR OBJECTS
The key to making this space work is balancing your objects with your unused space. Too many trinkets creates a cluttered look; too few, a sense of austere restraint. Balance is never a bad thing.
Don’t be scared to add tall sticks to that vase. Another trick to adding height is to add a table lamp. We are a huge fan of adding table lamps to console tables.
DON’T NEGLECT THE SPACE BENEATH YOUR CONSOLE TABLE
This is the perfect spot for baskets and stylish storage options. Jute and cane baskets and boxes add rustic sophistication and allow you to hide away shoes, toys, and other sundry items for a cleaner aesthetic.
FILL OUT THE SHELVES
There’s no right or wrong way to approach this step, so simply consider what looks most pleasing to your eye. Whatever pieces you choose, be sure to overlap a few of them slightly so that the groupings feel easy and natural.
LAYER COLORS OR TEXTURES
Add personality by layering objects you love. You could keep your styling monochromatic and focus on playing with textures, or add pops of color to enrich your white space.
Give it life and more visually appealing adds a natural/organic element such as an orchid, flowers, or even a terrarium.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that you don’t need a bunch of items to achieve a stylish result.
Console tables impart style to entryways and halls, dining, lounge and bedrooms, even your home office. Plus they introduce levels so you can maximize under-utilized spaces. There are a plethora of distinctive designs to match your aesthetic.
